Our Specimens

Where are your specimens from?
Our specimens are sourced from various butterfly farms from across the world which play an active role in conservation and sustainability. None of our specimens are captured from the wild. For more information, please see our Ethics Policy.

How do we grade our specimens?
As our insects are natural specimens, the quality can vary. All specimens listed on our website are A1 unless otherwise stated in the product title or description.

A1: These are perfect specimens (or as perfect as you can expect from natural specimens) except for leg damage.
A-: These specimens have minor damage such as broken or missing antennae, slight rub damage or small wing chips.
A2: These specimens have more significant damage such as major rub damage, large wing chips or staining.

Will I receive the exact specimen pictured on your website?
For all A1 specimens, the images on the website are representative of the specimen you will receive. As these are natural products, no two specimens are the same. Variation in size and colour is common.

For specimens listed as ‘damaged’ or graded as anything other than A1, you will receive the exact specimen pictured.

Why is my Morpho butterfly missing an abdomen?
Morpho butterflies, especially males, are often supplied without their abdomens because their oils stain the wings. Morphos without their abdomen are still considered to be A1.

Our Frames

How do I care for my frame?
Your frame is best displayed away from direct light and in a low-humidity environment. Direct light will cause the beautiful colours of these insects to fade, increased humidity can promote growth of mould.

It is also important to check your frames regularly for signs of other insects that could cause damage. Whilst all our specimens are treated prior to framing, other insects can still be present. If you notice an increase in small specs of dust within your frame, these may be book lice. The good news is book lice do not carry disease and can be easily treated.

To eliminate book lice inside your frame:

  • Place your frame in a zip-lock bag and place into the freezer for a minimum of 72 hours.
  • Remove the frame from the freezer and allow to come to room temperature.
  • Repeat the freezing process to kill any remaining lice and eggs.

Please note not all specs of dust within your frames are book lice. Some dust and scales may shed from your specimen during postage that will also appear as dust within the frame.
